Pilot ZenodoRDM Annotation Service for Plazi TreatmentBank

ZenodoRDM is a major update of the OpenAIRE repository for research data, being released in November 2023. Using the InvenioRDM version of the Invenio software platform, which has been developed and is now managed by an international consortium led by CERN, ZenodoRDM will include new functionality for research data management, including native IIIF support.

In parallel with the ZenodoRDM release, the repository accessible here—which uses the same InvenioRDM version 11.0—enables advance development and testing of an annotation service for ZenodoRDM, which connects with Plazi TreatmentBank. Annotations are represented using the Web Annotation Data Model (WADM) standard of W3C—promoting interoperability and preservation—and can be converted dynamically for compatibility with consuming applications and multiple IIIF viewers. This project was initiated by Plazi, in collaboration with the Open Science Repositories Section at CERN and Data Futures GmbH, and is supported by Arcadia Fund.

Click the 🔍 above to browse a test sample of publications, and click on a publication title to see annotations on its pages using the Mirador-3 IIIF viewer. See also https://ejt.biodiversity.hasdai.org/ which was developed during 2021 in preparation for this Arcadia project, showing approximately 500 thousand annotations on the publications of the CETAF's European Journal of Taxonomy, which were converted to WADM. In contrast, this repository enables authorized contributors to edit and download updated annotations, in addition to making publications accessible to the research community (where copyright restrictions permit), demonstrating forthcoming ZenodoRDM functionality.
